Treated for Sound
Even after all these years, soundproofing a vehicle’s doors is still necessary. Here, we review the options and benefits of including soundproofing in your system design.
Although sound treatment is always included in a good installation, there is still some reluctance on behalf of customers to add it. Sometimes it is due to weight. A single sheet of Skinz Expert 3mm sound deadening weighs approx. 500 grams. Some people raise this as an objection, but I don’t think your car’s performance will be desperately affected. Another obstacle is cost. However, the benefits on sound are huge. The density and damping effect of the Skinz deadening sheet offer solidity to the door panel, which will improve your speaker’s projection into the cabin space of your vehicle. A 2mm version is also available. This is lighter and has generally found its place when applied to walls, roofs, and the floor of panel vans. In this application, the effect on the general feel and noise inside the vehicle makes for a far more comfortable drive.
The effect becomes more dramatic when supplemented with Skinz panel liner. This self-adhesive, dense foam is flexible enough to be added to the complex shapes inside door cards to remove resonances and reflections. These are never good as they add frequency-specific peaks to your music, adding unnecessary colour to the sound.
Adding Skinz Wave Diffuser behind your speakers will disburse and absorb much of the energy from the rear of them, improving performance, particularly at higher levels.
Various products, when combined, can vastly reduce wind and road noise inside your vehicle.
Your specialist installer will use their knowledge and experience to select the best combination of products for your specific vehicle.
It would be simple for car manufacturers to add sound treatment to cars during manufacture. Some vehicles will have an arbitrary square of something close to Skinz sound deadening in the doors, and bulkheads in footwells often have a thick woven material fitted. However, these attempts go nowhere near far enough to affect the sound of the door speakers dramatically. They probably feel the speakers are not worth the effort and expense.
They may well be right!
